Coalesced graphics settings for ME Trilogy

Postby hansausbremen » 28 Jun 2016, 16:44

Nice work on the ME3 Coalesced.bin and especially the ALOT Mod! But I'm having some issues once I edit the .bin file according to your list.

I get black pixels in a specific radius around shepard. This black area on objects grows / shrinks depending on his distance to the objects, there seems to be a specific threshold. Pixels closer to shepard than the threshold are black or darker (see the screenshots below).
I get these artifacts only when I change the texturegroups. I hence believe this to be an issue with LOD. Could also be the normalmaps though, because it seems to be only the parts facing the camera that turn black.

Do you have any ideas how to fix this and still get the high-res textures?

Also while editing the file I found your list still has duplicates and some entries not to be found in the original Coalesced.bin. Also they are in a different order to that of the original file as presented in the coalesced editor you proposed.

Entries not found
Spoiler:
TEXTUREGROUP_Character_2048=(MinLODSize=64,MaxLODSize=2048,LODBias=0)
TEXTUREGROUP_Environment_2048=(MinLODSize=32,MaxLODSize=2048,LODBias=0)
TEXTUREGROUP_GUI=(MinLODSize=1024,MaxLODSize=2048,LODBias=-1)
TEXTUREGROUP_LightAndShadowMap=(MinLODSize=1024,MaxLODSize=4096,LODBias=-1)
I figured the last entry was meant to adjust _lightmap and _shadowmap so I edited both accordingly.

The only duplicate is:

TEXTUREGROUP_Character_Spec=(MinLODSize=256,MaxLODSize=4096,LODBias=0)

Thanks for the feedback, I updated the guide accordingly. Not sure what causes the issue though, and I can't see anything on your screenshots. Could you upload higher resolution ones ? Other users had issues with the LODBias=-1 on some texturegroups (namely texturegroup_environment_512). But this guide sets this one to 0, so maybe some other texturegroup(s) have a similar problem.

You can see it in my screenshots: It happens on the objects left and right of Shepard. Those Liara and Kaidan stand next to in the first image. Those turn black. The terminals on the wall straight ahead get significantly darker.

In the first picture they are textured. In the following pictures they consist of more and more black areas. The closer Shepard / the camera gets, the more black areas appear. In the second image only the most forward parts are black. In the fourth image you can see a circular border on the bottom of the middle terminal. In the last image they are pretty much all black.

Note: This is in an early level on Mars where Shepard used a flashlight for a darker passage. But this is later, where everything should be lit.
I've seen the artifacts on several environmental objects. Some Buildings as well as the machinery in the screenshots.

I already tried to use a bias of 0 instead of -1 because I first thought that was causing the trouble, but that did not fix the issue.

You tried bias = 0 on all the texturegroups ?

Well, the issue must bee somewhere in those texturegroup lines. Try setting 4096 minlodsizes to a lower value, like 256 or 512. I'll do some testing on my side too.

Changing the TEXTUREGROUP_VFX lines in ME3, results in graphical glitches for me...
EDIT: I was wrong. VFX are ok, but changing TEXTUREGROUP_Environment_ makes the graphics buggy.

Is the TEXTUREGROUP_LightAndShadowMap line a typo?
I only found TEXTUREGROUP_Lightmap and TEXTUREGROUP_Shadowmap.

The issue happens for all Environment Texturegroups ?

Yes... Different type of textures are getting dark or turning invisible if i'm close to them with each environment line. I'm also using ALOT texture pack, maybe it's working well with original textures.

I think the issue is related to the MaxLODSize value. It works okay if I don't change the value of MaxLODSize, but I can't tell if it makes any difference.
