King Feraligatr's Mass Effect 2 and 3 Total Rewrite Thread

Postby KingFeraligatr » 12 Jun 2015, 09:12

Speaking that I have accepted ME1 and ME2 as guilty pleasures, I figured I'd start back up on my rewrite idea for ME2 and ME3. Feel free to comment or ignore.

As you all know, I think the Mass Effect trilogy did many questionable things all around. A couple months ago (when I like ME1 more), I was inspired by all the criticism of the trilogy to make up a Mass Effect 2 and 3 rewrite idea to give the trilogy some of the quality I think it deserved but did not hit. Me being the lazy *** person that I am though, didn't really work on my design draft and I instead kept it all in my head. I thought I'd make a thread to tell everyone what I thought up during all that time. Note that I do not think anyone will be able to make my idea a reality --- it's purely something I like to think about. Also, almost everything is able to be changed and thought about. I intended it as collaborative effort from the start.

The the new games are called NME2 and NME3 (New Mass Effect 2 and 3), just for reference. I suck at naming. Also, these games are total rewrite of ME2 and ME3. BW's ME2 and 3 are non canon and only pools for ideas. Basically, BW ME2 and 3 didn't happen. ME1 is the only canon I use and the only BW ME game that happened in my rewrite.

Some new plot points I thought of:
A major plot point is figuring out how to use the Citadel relay to somehow to permanently defeat the Reapers hibernating in dark space (no Reaper is active in my rewrite besides Sovereign, who's dead by this time). Shepard must build alliances, research, train and army and his/her team, etc. in order to carry this out. One option would be to use the Citadel to access the Reapers and hopefully get the jump on them and own them. All this would take time and would happen would all culminate at the end of NME3. This basically can be like an uber suicide mission. It's much more involved and far more can die. Expect anywhere from a victory with some losses to a crushing defeat. And you're not stuck in dark space, it serves to reason the Reapers have a Mass Relay on their end to carry out their invasion.
The main antagonists are the Geth that where allied with Saren and Sovereign. You didn't expect them to be less of a threat after beating them only a little did you? These Geth are the main Geth faction in my rewrite (unlike BW). And they're pissed that you killed their god. They're more powerful and keep gaining power as you go, unless you can find some way to halt them. Shepard must stop them from sabotaging their efforts and contacting the Reapers. These Geth will use indoctrination, husks, hacks, viruses, etc. to bring about their goal of purging all life the galaxy in what they see as glorious. There's probably a friendly (and maybe neutral) Geth faction, but they're much smaller and you'll have to work to get them on your side. The enemy Geth wouldn't be permanently dealt with until around the end of NME3 (with options to forcibly convert them if you've done enough). Also, I assume they use other races aa slaves and husks.
The end of NME2 has a pseudo suicide mission to sabotage a major enemy Geth base. The Geth are assembling a fleet to attack the Citadel and to somehow make contact with the Reapers, whether it's at the Citadel or not. Shepard must use the allies they built up to defeat this threat and strike a major blow against the Geth. People will die and it would be almost impossible to bring out all your squad alive. Any squad members that are not the Big Four (Garrus, the VS, Liara, Tali; who always survive until NME3. They can be incapacitated for the rest of the mission though.) can die, including in gameplay. It is brutally hard. Choose to go in to attack the station, beat it with ships only, or combine them; and much more.
The events of NME2 start a couple weeks after the the end of ME1. Shepard is investigating how to beat the Reapers. Also the events of NME2 and 3 are supposed to be long *** and take around an in-game decade I guess. This is of course subject to change.
Cerberus is not a powerhouse like ME2 and 3. They're more like they where in ME1 and are a minor antagonist at best. You can ally with them, ignore them, capture them, utterly annihilate them, etc. in NME3. Whether they have TIM or not is to be decided.
In the wake of the Battle of Citadel, numerous factions have arisen from the chaos that the battle caused. Some want to gain power, others want to research what happened, others are rebel factions, others are "end times" factions, and so on. Shepard can choose to help some of them, recruit some of them, destroy some of them
, ignore some of them and so on.

More if I can think of them.

New/returning gameplay features:
A more open gameplay. Besides a few mandatory story events and time locked events, do many things in almost any order.
Hopefully choices and actions that may actually have some actual impact at times! And downplaying the "Paragon is almost always the right choice" hopefully!
Expanded leveling system. I guess sort of like ME1 but with some evolutions like ME2 and 3. Choose to specialize more and be able to learn more skills, powers, etc.
Hopefully Paragon is more just a friendly person and somewhat idealistic, not the "holier than thou" of BW. And hopefully Renegade is more of the pragmatic and ruthless side; not a sadistic, racist *******. Also, removing a lot of the binary morality and downplaying the P/R system a bit.
Maybe changing the dialogue wheel to a more traditional dialogue system and less dumbed down.
An expanded and actually intuitive upgrade and inventory system. More upgrades, more weapons, more types of items, etc.
More powers. Hopefully more exciting as well. Also, individual power cooldowns and powers actually affect barriers.
Everyone can actually use every weapon, just not as effectively as some others. SMGS are added to the mix. Everyone carries one of each type of weapon.
Hybrid overheat/thermal clip guns later on in the games' events. Overheat is overall superior and is general use. Thermal clips are for when you need to get out tons of fire fast. Thermal clips are actually universal and can't be vented early. Thermal clips might cooldown over time. Squadmates don't have infinite thermal clips and you to manage their clips.
Everyone actually uses full body suits in combat. No people running around with no armor/clothes on in combat....
New squadmates! In addition to the Big Four (Garrus, Liara, Tali, the VS) returning, new squadmates can potentially join you. I haven't thought of any new ones, but maybe candidates are another human squadmate, someone like Mordin, someone like Legion, etc. Garrus, Liara, and the VS always survive to the beginning of the ending part of NME3. I would say that there wouldn't be too much extras. More like 6-10 max (across both NME2 and 3.)
Play as squadmates in game (actually assume control of them).
More variable part size. Go solo as Shepard. Or take one squadmate. Or more than two. I'm guessing up to 4 except in special cases. Basically a way to get around that forced two squadmate limit
More indepth relationships with crew members. Romances with actual substance including the ability for your lover to dump you. The ability for crew and squad members to get angry or happy with you, even leaving if they're mad enough. Or becoming friends with you. I'd say being good allies would be optimal.
Downplaying the romance mechanic and number of love interests. However, the relationship is more substantial and is more about the actual relationship, not ***. Shepard can be straight, gay, lesbian, bi, etc., but can only romance humans and Asari. No Garrus and Tali romances in my rewrite, for example (see below though). Also, you have to actually work to keep the relationship going.
The ability to become "Best Friends" with a major crew member or any squad member. The Best Friend is a new type on in depth relationship. Unlike romances, it's easier to maintain, can be changed for another character far more easier, etc. It's also possible to have a Best Friend and a romance at the same time (but there could be consequences). Talk with your Best Friend (also applies to the romances) and get a more in depth relationship. It is possible to be Best Friends with potential love interest and not be in a romance, or it's possible for your lover to be your Best Friend. Best Friends are especially good for people who want a deeper relationship but don't want to romance someone.
Talk to your squadmates in mission and get more than one liners.
Upgrade and train your squadmates in new ways and in new specializations. Also, squaddies aren't strictly tied to Shepard's level.
Send squaddies to do their own thing or work on research, training, etc. Reacquire them when you want them back.
Build alliances and do some diplomacy. [add to this later]
Ship combat! Actually use the Normandy in firefights, command allies, and upgrade the ship. I don't know if the SR2 will be available, but I hope to find a logical way to include something like it.

New goals include:
Figure out how to use the Citadel relay to permanently stop the Reapers. While it would be required to get the idea to use the Citadel Mass Relay, it wouldn't be required to know how to use it (but why would you do that? It's only going to screw you over.). Choices I'm guessing you can do with the Citadel are blow it up (dumb and last resort), shut down the Citadel's capability to shutdown the Reapers and contact them, use the Citadel to go into dark space with your allied forces (this is what I'm leaning on and it would be quite involved), etc.
Fight off the the enemy Geth faction and stop their attempts to expand, contact the Reapers to come and do their thing, etc. Also stop them from using the Citadel relay for the Reapers. If the Geth manage to contact the Reapers in NME2 or most of NME3, it Critical Mission Failure (because it throws what helps my rewrite work out of wack, AKA, hibernating Reapers). However, if the Geth are able to contact the Reapers later on in NME3 (bit not use the Citadel), the goals of the game change to preparing for the Reapers' arrival (they're no longer going to be where the Citadel relay would drop you off).
While the main blows to the enemy Geth would come from major story events, you can affect their numbers, advances, goals, etc. from attacking and sabotaging them and the like. They likely won't be defeated entirely until the end of NME3 (and even then, they might not be completely defeated and could taken out in the playable epilogue).

New/returning miscellaneous things include:
I'm tired now and I'll add in more later. Feel free to comment.

(Note that this post might not be updated and some of the information in it is outdated. Blame my laziness.)

Those are interesting ideas, especially the thoughts about revamping the Paragon/Renegade system and playing as squadmates like in Dragon Age (amongst others). But I can't see why you would ditch everything from ME2 and ME3. Imho there are good parts in both of them, even if the ending was frustrating and irrational. We wouldn't be modding them otherwise. I just can't understand the need many people have to criticize every single aspect of those games for some obscure reason I haven't yet seen.

That said, are these just ideas or do you really want to overhaul the entire games ?^^

This is a total redo of the series after ME1 and if it ever existed it might be on a different engine. It's way too ambitious though and time consuming to do anything for barring a fanfic. Sorry if I offend, but the main reason I play the later games anyways is for the characters and mods. I sort of stop caring about the plot and lore after ME1 speaking that I think that it takes a nosedive in quality.

I'm moving discussion of my Rewrite to my own forums. It is located here: http://kfmerewriteforums.proboards.com/ , but is down currently as I am preparing it. I have not given up on this. In fact, the Rewrite is now my personal canon and BW ME2 and 3 are AU fanfics. Also, NME 2 and 3 would be one long *** game now, not a trilogy with BW ME1. It would be easier to make, among other things.

Odd, I thought this Rewrite game could work if I made like a top down, 2-D sprite game. Still would be a log *** time to make.

Also, many things in the OP are outdated. I recommend my forums for better info.
